Start a 7 Day Challenge
Learn how timing our food, sleep, light, and exercise leads to better health
What are Circadian Rhythms?
Your circadian rhythm is your body’s internal 24-hour clock, orchestrating daily biological processes. This natural timekeeper influences when you sleep, eat, and feel energized throughout the day. It’s present in nearly every living thing – from humans to plants. Think of it as your body’s master scheduler, anticipating your daily needs before they arise. This internal clock helps regulate crucial functions like hormone production, body temperature, metabolism, and even your immune system.
How do Circadian Rhythms Work?
Your brain’s hypothalamus houses a cluster of cells called the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) – your body’s master clock. This control center responds primarily to light signals received through your eyes. When daylight enters your retina, it triggers the SCN to suppress melatonin (sleep hormone) production and boost cortisol (alertness hormone). As darkness falls, this process reverses. Environmental cues like meal timing and physical activity also help fine-tune this system, synchronizing your internal clock with the external world.
Optimise Your Internal Clock
Research has shown timing our daily eating, sleep, light, and exercise can impact health and performance. This program is inspired by groundbreaking research. It is part of the Ontime community for helping track biological rhythms in the real world, while also improving health by understanding our body’s rhythms.
How does the Circadian Challenge Work?

The Hidden Toll of Disrupted Circadian Rhythms on Human Health
Our internal biological clock, known as the circadian rhythm, governs countless physiological processes, from hormone production to body temperature regulation. When this delicate 24-hour cycle gets disrupted, the consequences for our health can be far-reaching and severe.
Research published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation demonstrates that circadian misalignment significantly impacts glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity1. Even short-term disruptions can lead to elevated blood sugar levels and increased risk of type 2 diabetes. The body’s ability to process nutrients effectively becomes compromised when meals don’t align with our natural biological timing.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified night shift work as a probable carcinogen2. Studies of long-term shift workers show elevated risks of breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers. This connection is believed to stem from disrupted melatonin production, a hormone crucial for both sleep regulation and cancer prevention.
The journal Lancet Psychiatry has published extensive research linking circadian disruption to various mental health conditions3. Depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder show strong associations with irregular sleep-wake patterns. The disruption of natural light exposure patterns affects neurotransmitter production and mood regulation.
Research in the European Heart Journal reveals that individuals with irregular sleep patterns face a significantly higher risk of cardiovascular disease4. Disrupted circadian rhythms affect blood pressure regulation, heart rate variability, and endothelial function.
Recent studies in Nature Immunology show that circadian disruption compromises immune function5. The timing of immune cell production and activity follows distinct daily patterns, and disruption can lead to increased susceptibility to infections and inflammatory conditions.
Studies published in Nature Reviews Neuroscience indicate that circadian rhythm disruption significantly impairs cognitive performance6. Research shows that irregular sleep patterns can lead to decreased attention span, impaired memory consolidation, and reduced problem-solving abilities. Long-term disruption has been linked to accelerated cognitive aging and increased risk of neurodegenerative disorders.
